State Key Laboratory of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Safety

2026 Open Fund Application Guidelines

The State Key Laboratory of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering Safety (hereinafter referred to as “the Laboratory”) is hosted by the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Guided by national development strategies and the safety needs of major engineering projects throughout construction, operation, and maintenance, the Laboratory focuses on three main research areas: geotechnical disaster prevention and control, underground space utilization and safe operation and maintenance, and the construction and in-service performance of offshore geotechnical works. It advances geomechanical theory and develops key geotechnical engineering technologies for complex and extreme environments.

The Laboratory operates under the principles of “openness, mobility, collaboration, and competition.” It is committed to building a world-class research platform in this field. To promote academic exchange and collaboration in China and abroad, the Laboratory hereby issues the 2026 Open Fund Application Guidelines.

I. Priority Research Areas

1. Mechanisms for Geotechnical Disaster Prevention and Control

This area focuses on the multiscale catastrophic failure mechanisms of rock and soil masses in major engineering projects under complex conditions. These projects include deep underground works, subgrade works, and slope works. Priority topics include:

  1. Physical modeling of catastrophic failure processes in rock and soil masses under complex conditions, and integrated high-precision acoustic, optical, and electrical testing technologies.
  2. Evolution mechanisms of the structure, state, and behavior of rock and soil masses under engineering disturbances; mechanical models and theories for catastrophic failure under multiphysics and multiphase coupling.
  3. Intelligent early-warning systems for major engineering hazards, and life-cycle safety prevention and control technologies.

2. Underground Space Utilization and Safe Operation and Maintenance

This area addresses major national needs for the safety of underground energy storage, carbon storage, and waste storage projects. Priority topics include:

  1. Technologies for investigating and assessing geological conditions for underground storage, and simulation-based design methods for key operating parameters of underground storage facilities.
  2. Technologies for the high-quality construction of large underground energy-storage caverns under complex geological conditions; integrity of sealing structures; and the spatiotemporal response of surrounding rock.
  3. Leakage-risk monitoring and early warning for underground storage facilities; disaster-triggering      mechanisms of cascading failures; and intelligent operation and maintenance technologies and systems based on multisource information fusion.

3. Construction and In-Service Performance of Offshore Geotechnical Engineering

This area addresses the construction and long-term safe performance of major geotechnical works in offshore waters and on islands and reefs. Priority topics include:

  1. Intelligent investigation of seabed formations and in situ testing technologies;  physical modeling and numerical simulation of water-soil-structure interaction under extreme marine conditions.
  2. Multiscale characterization models for marine geomaterials, and theories for the mechanical analysis of multiphase interfaces.
  3. Technologies for monitoring and predicting the long-term performance of offshore pile foundations; intelligent monitoring and emergency response platforms for marine geohazards.

4. Frontier and Interdisciplinary Research in Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering

This area focuses on frontier and interdisciplinary problems in geomechanics and geotechnical engineering under extreme deep-Earth, deep-sea, and deep-space conditions. Priority topics include:

  1. Geomechanics for deep-space exploration and the development and utilization of extraterrestrial resources; key technologies for geotechnical engineering in polar regions.
  2. AI-enabled theories and methods for geomechanics and geotechnical engineering.
